Vamos examinar o caso do Oracle, que é multiplataforma, tomando por exemplo,
a versão 8.x, a última que produziu para rodar no NetWare 5.x da Novell. No
Yes, Tested and Approved, da Novell, lemos:

" Oracle8 for NetWare includes support for virtually all generic Oracle8
features, including: Multiple instances, Parallel Query Option, Advanced
Replication Option, Spatial Data Option, Advanced Networking Option,
Partitioning Option and Bitmapped Indexing.   In addition, NDS integration

capability.The Oracle8 Server for NetWare is comprised of a series of NLMs
which allow Windows Clients and Application Servers to request data from the

The key development component of NetWare 5.1 is the Universal Component

Ou seja, para cada plataforma deve haver os dispositivos correspondentes. O
NetWare continua sendo o sistema mais seguro entre os sistemas operacionais
de rede, e é uma pena que a Oracle descontinuou a versão para o NetWare,
onde vinha default, e teve que ser substituido pelo MySQL e PostgreSQL.

É uma questão de ponto de vista, sem vencedor ou perdedor. Eu prefiro esta
alternativa, e você, a de embutir todos estes dispositivos dentro do próprio
gerenciador de banco de dados.
