Option 2 for Ubuntu, unreservedly. My experiences with the Firebird packages 
in
the Deb/Ub repository were just full of hassles, even just trying to get 
hold of
everything that comes in a "native" Firebird installation and then trying to
find where things have been installed.

The tarball install, on the other hand, is a piece of cake on any Linux.
